Why Habitat is Needed
Housing must become a priority! The percentage of people without access to decent and stable housing is rising. Increasing the housing supply across the globe is essential. Therefore, adequate housing is vitally important to the health of the world’s economies, communities, and populations.
To succeed in the fight against poverty we must support the expansion of housing both as policy and as practice. In Jefferson County there is an estimated 15.4% of the population living below the poverty level. The level is only slightly lower in Lewis County with an estimated 13.5%. This is a serious problem because sub-standard and unsafe housing conditions lead to increases in illness, injuries, and financial burdens.
The world is experiencing a global housing crisis. Habitat for Humanity is working to make a meaningful difference in the communities we serve across the globe by improving access to decent and affordable housing. Decent, affordable, and stable housing provides more than just a roof over someone’s head. It provides:
- Stability for families and children
- A sense of dignity and pride
- Good health, physical safety and security
About Thousand Islands Area Habitat for Humanity
Thousand Islands Area Habitat for Humanity (TIAHFH) is part of a global, non-profit housing organization operated on Christian principles that seek to put God’s love into action by building homes, communities, and hope. TIAHFH is dedicated to eliminating substandard housing locally and worldwide. And we do this by:
- Constructing, rehabilitating, and preserving homes
- Advocating for fair and just housing policies
- Providing training and access to resources to help families improve their shelter conditions
Habitat for Humanity was founded on the conviction that every man, woman, and child should have a simple, durable place to live in dignity and safety.
